What’s the Difference Between Skilled and Custodial Care?
There are two types of care offered in nursing homes: skilled and custodial care. Skilled care refers to skilled nursing or rehabilitation services ordered by a doctor that can only be provided by licensed health professionals like nurses and physical therapists. Examples include physical therapy, wound care, intravenous injections, catheter care, and more. Custodial care consists of care that can reasonably and safely be provided by non-licensed caregivers (like nurses’ aides) and involves help with daily activities like bathing and dressing, and more.
